Alissa Walser

Born in Friedrichshafen in 1961, Alissa Walser is a German writer, painter, and translator. She studied painting in New York and Vienna. In 1992, she received the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize and the Bettina von Arnim Prize for her story “Geschenkt.” She was awarded the Paul Scheerbart Prize in 2009 for her translation of Sylvia Plath’s poems, and the Spycher Literature Prize Leuk in 2010 for her novel Am Anfang war die Nacht Musik. Her publications include the story collection Die kleinere Hälfte der Welt, Immer ich, Von den Tieren im Notieren, and Eindeutiger Versuch einer Verführung. As a translator, she translated works by Sylvia Plath, Anne Carson, and Paula Fox, as well as plays by Joyce Carol Oates and Edward Albee, into German.
