Alfred Schütz (1899–1959) was born in Vienna, where he studied law and political science. He subsequently held senior positions at several banks. In 1932, he published his major work, *The Phenomenological Structure of the Social World* (*Der sinnhafte Aufbau der sozialen Welt*). In 1938/39, Schütz emigrated via Paris to New York, where he initially continued working for a Viennese bank. From 1944, he taught at the New School of Social Research, published essays on social science, and worked on *The Structures of the Lifeworld* (*Strukturen der Lebenswelt*).
