Alfred Kerr

Alfred Kerr (1867–1948) was a German-Jewish writer, journalist and one of the most influential theater critics of the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. Born in Breslau, he studied literary criticism in Berlin and wrote for publications including the Breslauer Zeitung, Der Tag, the Berliner Tageblatt and the Frankfurter Zeitung. He also edited the art journal Pan. In addition to a multi-volume collection of his criticism, Kerr published travel writing, poetry and essays, including Die Welt im Drama (1917) and Die Welt im Licht (1920). After the Nazi book burnings in 1933, he fled Germany and lived in exile, first in France and later in London.
