Alfred Andersch

Alfred Andersch (1914–1980) was a German writer, journalist, and essayist. Born in Munich in 1914, he was interned at Dachau concentration camp in 1933 because of his political activities in the Communist Youth League. He deserted from the Wehrmacht in 1944 and subsequently spent more than a year as an American prisoner of war. After returning to Germany, Andersch worked primarily in radio, as well as in journalism and publishing. He is regarded as one of the significant authors of postwar German literature. Andersch died in 1980 in Berzona, Ticino.
