Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), also known as Alexandre Dumas père, was a French writer, playwright, and travel writer. He was born in Villers-Cotterêts and died in Puys. Dumas began his literary career with plays before achieving wide renown for his historical adventure novels. His best-known works include *The Three Musketeers*, *Twenty Years After*, *The Vicomte de Bragelonne*, *The Count of Monte Cristo*, *Queen Margot*, and *The Lady of Monsoreau*. His father was General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, the son of a French nobleman and an enslaved woman from Saint-Domingue.
