Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008), born in Kislovodsk, was a mathematics teacher and writer. He was imprisoned in a Soviet camp from 1945 to 1953 and then spent three years in exile. In 1969 he was expelled from the Soviet Writers’ Union. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. After being expelled from the Soviet Union, he lived abroad and returned to Russia in 1994. His works include the unfinished cycle of novels The Red Wheel.
