Aldous Leonard Huxley (1894–1963) was a British author and journalist. He studied English literature at Oxford and subsequently worked as a journalist and art and theatre critic. His novels, essays, and short stories critically examined social systems, consumerism, and the consequences of technological progress. His best-known work is the dystopian novel *Brave New World* (1932). His other works include the novel *Island* and numerous essays and travel writings. A severe eye illness affected his eyesight from an early age.
