Albrecht Wellmer

Albrecht Wellmer (1933–2018) was a German philosopher and social theorist. He initially studied mathematics and physics in Berlin and Kiel before studying philosophy and sociology in Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main, where he received his doctorate and habilitation in philosophy. A student of Theodor W. Adorno, Wellmer contributed to critical theory. He taught, among other places, at the New School for Social Research in New York, the University of Konstanz, and Freie Universität Berlin; he became professor emeritus in 2001. In 2006, he received the Theodor W. Adorno Prize. His works include the essay collection “Versuch über Musik und Sprache” (2009). Wellmer died in Berlin in 2018.
