Albert Schweitzer (1875–1965) was a German-French theologian, philosopher, musicologist, organist and tropical physician. He initially studied theology, philosophy and music, earned doctorates in theology and philosophy, and completed his habilitation in Strasbourg. From 1905 onward, he studied medicine in preparation for working as a physician in Africa. In 1913, he travelled to Lambaréné in present-day Gabon for the first time. His notable works include “The Philosophy of Civilization” (“Kultur und Ethik”), “Out of My Life and Thought” and “On the Edge of the Primeval Forest”.
