Alan Watts (1915–1973) was a British religious philosopher, author, and Anglican priest. From 1939 onward, he worked primarily in the United States, first as a priest and later as a lecturer and freelance writer. He became known for his accessible interpretations of Eastern philosophies, particularly Zen Buddhism, Daoism, and Hinduism. His first book, *The Spirit of Zen*, was published in 1936. Watts played a significant role in introducing Eastern wisdom traditions to Western audiences and had a notable influence on the counterculture of the 1960s.
