Alan Sillitoe

Alan Sillitoe (1928–2010) was a British writer. Born into a working-class family in Nottingham, he worked in factories from the age of 14 and later served as a radio operator in the Royal Air Force. After contracting tuberculosis, he spent an extended period in a sanatorium, where he began writing. He became known for his novel *Saturday Night and Sunday Morning* (1958), which depicts working-class life in Nottingham. His short story *The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner* also brought him international recognition and won an English literary prize in 1959.
