Alain Robbe-Grillet

Alain Robbe-Grillet (1922–2008) was a French writer and one of the leading authors associated with the Nouveau Roman. Born in Brest, he studied agriculture and later worked at the Institut national de la statistique. He published his first novel, “Les Gommes,” in 1953. Alongside writers such as Michel Butor, Nathalie Sarraute, Marguerite Duras, and Claude Simon, he was part of the circle of Nouveau Roman authors gathered around the Éditions de Minuit publishing house. His later works include “La Reprise” (“The Wiederholung”/“The Repetition,” 2002). Robbe-Grillet died in Caen in 2008.
