This is exactly what I mean when I say I don’t want the usual fantasy clichés, because this book actually avoids them. Was it perfect? No. There were definitely a few small things I’d nitpick. But overall? The story was genuinely really good. I especially loved how queerness was woven in so naturally. No big speeches, no making a “thing” out of it. Just existing, as it should. And the dynamic between Grey and Kier? So good. I love female protagonists who would burn the world for the male lead just as much as he’d do it for her. Grey was such a strong, compelling main character, and honestly she carried a huge part of the book for me. All in all, a very solid read and especially impressive for a standalone fantasy.
