This was a reread, ten years after the first time. Then, I found this book fantastic. The use of words and language is just phenomenal, still. But then, a decade later I thought the middle part with its endless dinners and parties seemed to go nowhere. Maybe the whole combo of UK politics and class snobbery, tormented coming out lifelines, and AIDS scare doesn’t work today. And in the back of my mind, after the touching finish, I couldn’t help but wonder what is Hollinghurst‘s real, personal story behind all this…
