Reviewed by VerenaAnother “what the hell did I just read?”-book. The writing is absolutely beautiful, rich with atmosphere and vivid imagery. Some passages felt almost dreamlike, especially the scenes among the ancient ruins, which were easily my favorite part of the novel. The pacing was veryyyy sloooow, and ngl, there were moments where the story dragged so much that I wanted to throw it against a damn wall. And I still have questions about the ending. Was Lucian losing his mind? Was it all a dream? Was there something supernatural at work? I still don’t know, and I think that’s exactly what Machen intended. While I didn’t connect with the story as deeply as I had hoped, I really appreciated its haunting atmosphere and gorgeous prose.
