I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book, loved it, but after that I was really disappointed and almost DNF'd it. It felt like every possible bit of drama was forced into the story, and it just didn't feel right.

High four star rating. I loved this book. I loved reading it. Talking about it. Letting the longing Leni feels for Alaska become my own - almost booking the flight right away. Leni is a wonderful character to follow in her coming-of-age, her finding a home, finding love, strength and forgiveness. The slight deduction is due to some redundant moments as well as themes in the story that appear but don't feel well interwoven more laid on top (injustices against women in court/law proceedings, PTSD). I liked the female characters variety from Lenis very conservatively "female" grandmother to Large Marges confidence and intransigence. Furthermore Hannah explores different types of love, relationship and belonging. The cold harsh north were everyone is unique, some more eccentric than others and still everyone sticks together. Big recommendation to dive into a good read about Alaska a place where "Crazy Pete is the happiest married person I know.". - married to his goose Maggie.
