Reviewed by LeyaIrische Magdalenen-Wäschereien, katholische Kloster, die „gefallene“ oder „verlorene“ Mädchen aufnehmen, um sie dann mehr oder weniger zu versklaven, ihre Arbeit auszunutzen, ihnen ihre Kinder wegzunehmen und wahrscheinlich noch viel mehr, sind ein wichtiges Thema. Warum schreibt man als Frau dann ein Buch über einen Mann und sein Leben, der mal kurz nebenbei ein einziges Mädchen aus so einem Heim „rettet“ und die Erleuchtung hat: was ist der Punkt des Lebens und eines christlichen Lebens, wenn man sich nicht gegenseitig hilft? Das ist echt revolutionär, herzlichen Glückwunsch. Vielleicht habe ich den Text auch falsch verstanden, correct me if I‘m wrong, aber so ein wichtiges Thema hätte man meiner Meinung nach viel breiter und den Mädchen, die betroffen waren, gerecht ausleuchten sollen. Die Thematik grundsätzlich war eine Sache, die ich gut fand. Die zweite, dass das Buch so kurz war, weil ich es sonst abgebrochen hätte.

Reviewed by Arina MahwiThis is already the best book I've read this year. It's painfully beautiful in the best way. The story follows Bill Furlong, a coal merchant in 1980s Ireland. One day while making deliveries to a convent, he discovers the institution, believed to be a training school for girls, is a Magdalene laundry. Magdalene laundries were institutions run by Catholic religious orders where so-called fallen women were subjected to forced labor under inhuman harsh conditions. These women were usually unmarried mothers, victims of sexual abuse, and simply girls who didn't fit into society. The church held immense power over the Irish life and these asylums operated from 18th into late 20th century. At the convent, Bill meets a pregnant young woman named Sarah and despite the cultural pressure to stay silent, he chooses to help her. That quiet decision becomes a powerful act of moral courage. This story explores how small moments, often overlooked, can hold immense weight. It shows the danger of collective silence and the extraordinary impact of kindness in the face of injustice.
