Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under―but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.If you wanted to change this story, how far back would you have to go? To the infamous bee sting that ruined Imelda’s wedding day? To the car crash one year before Cass was born? All the way back to Dickie at ten years old, standing in the summer garden with his father, learning how to be a real man?The Bee Sting, Paul Murray’s exuberantly entertaining new novel, is a tour de force: a portrait of postcrash Ireland, a tragicomic family saga, and a dazzling story about the struggle to be good at the end of the world.

After 4 months of trying to find any joy in this book, I finally gave up. From drawn out useless details to 200+ pages with no punctuation for Imelda’s section… a disappointment to me. Sucked the joy right out of reading for me and put me in a reading rut.

CaroRezension von Caro

„Life at that time was like walking on a path made of spinning tops. You took a step you were spun off one way. The next step spun you off another. Every moment was the moment when everything changed.“ Wow, das war mal ein Roman! Die Geschichte wurde aus 4 Perspektiven geschrieben, es gab so viele Wendungen und Fallhöhen, richtig gut gemacht.

LenaRezension von Lena

I dragged myself through this and the ending is ???? Idk man It read kinda satirical at some points?? Everyone was unlikeable, I didn't care about them, nothing good happened to them either, A miss for me

SinahRezension von Sinah

It is kinda bumpy when it comes to the narrating of the teenager's perspective - there are just some details that are kind of disturbing the reading flow. However, the dynamic of the book is incredibly well constructed and it's incredibly hard to stop reading, especially when you reach the final pages.
