Shannon Messenger studierte Kunst, Drehbuchschreiben sowie Film- und Fernsehproduktion, unter anderem an der USC School of Cinematic Arts, die sie mit Magna Cum Laude abschloss. Nach einem Jahr in Hollywood entschied sie sich für das Schreiben. Bekannt wurde sie vor allem durch die Fantasy-Jugendbuchreihe „Keeper of the Lost Cities“, die wiederholt auf der New-York-Times-Bestsellerliste stand. Ihre Bücher wurden in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt.
