Rezension von Bhoomi KotakSome books stay with you because of the story, and some because of the world they create — The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese does both beautifully. Set around the village of Parambil, the book takes you through generations of one family and the lives connected to them. There are so many characters, emotions, relationships, and individual stories woven together that it almost feels like watching life unfold over decades. One of the strongest underlying themes in the book is leprosy — the stigma attached to it in the 1800s and 1900s, the fear around it, and the emotional toll it took on people and families. It is heartbreaking in parts, but written with so much sensitivity and warmth. It is definitely an extremely long read and not the kind you rush through. You really have to persevere with it, but the way everything comes together in the end makes it completely worth it. Sad, beautiful, emotional, and deeply human.
Rezension von Kaja MichelTop 5 all time reads, way up there alongside Shadow of the Wind and Wild Swans, beautifully written painting lush pictures of a culture, history to me unknown precursingly. Truly inspiring!
