Während er sich immer weiter von der Welt zurückzieht, sorgt sich seine Mitschülerin Sayo um ihn und bringt ihm täglich die Hausaufgaben. Eines Tages erscheint auf wundersame Weise eine orangefarbige Katze und fordert ihn auf, Bücher zu retten. So beginnt die Reise in ein Labyrinth und die Frage danach, was Bücher so besonders macht. Während Rintaro die Bücher rettet, wächst er aus seiner Trauer und Verschlossenheit hinaus und findet Antworten, die er nicht gesucht hat.
Rezension von GabrieleA charming story that addresses very relevant topics about the publishing industry, the handling of books and today's society. I particularly liked the hikikomori aspect. Contrary to what the title suggests, it's not about the cat: they serve more as a trigger for the actual plot. For those who are not familiar with the peculiarities of Japanese society and Japanese literature, the realisation of the theme might seem a little unusual (too elaborate, too unfocused). In the English translation, there is a final note by the translator pointing out certain translation problems. This helps to understand the narrative style.
