Tell Me Again How A Crush Should Feel

von Sara Farizan

Format:Softcover

With the heart of Judy Blume and wit of Alison Bechdel, Sara Farizan brings the authenticity and humour that distinguished her debut novel, If You Could Be Mine, to her second work of fiction for teensLeila has made it most of the way through high school without having a crush on anyone, which comes as something of a relief. Her Persian heritage makes her different enough; if word got out that Leila liked girls, life would be twice as hard. And what would her parents think? It’s bad enough she’s not even going to become a doctor. But when a sophisticated, beautiful new girl, Saskia, shows up, Leila starts to take risks she never dreamed of, especially when it looks as if the attraction between them is mutual. Struggling to sort out her growing feelings and Saskia’s confusing signals, Leila confides in her old friend, Lisa, and grows closer to Tomas, whose comments about his own sexuality are frank, funny, wise and sometimes painful. Gradually, Leila begins to see that almost all of her classmates are more complicated than they first appear to be, and many are keeping fascinating secrets of their own.

This book would have changed my life for the better in high school. I don't know if it's because the setting and atmosphere here is so similar to my own high school, or that I related to so much of what the characters felt and expressed, but I have never been so moved by a story or set of characters. Leila is my exact brand of awkward, over analyzing her interactions; she gets a lot of my weird neuroses. "I never feel [beautiful], I feel... not yet assembled, if that even makes sense". Lisa is somehow exactly my feelings about my own sexuality. I get her reluctance to figure a label for herself out, I still feel some of the confusion she seems to feel in the novel. They don't shy away from the possibility of her being bi, she's just going through a lot of other things and not ready to deal with figuring all that out right now (nor is she the main character/focus of the story), the only thing she is sure of are her feelings for Lelia. The book has so much empathy for her, and her relationship with Leila is perfect and sweet and full of understanding and it was everything I wanted starting from when I had a hope or inkling the book was going to take that direction. Leila and her family, her friends, are treated with so much empathy and love, and given that I saw pieces of myself in all of them, this book made me feel loved too. It just got me. It's got a few typos and it took a little while for me to get used to, but oh boy am I glad I stuck it out.
