The story follows Noah, a 15-year-old honor student and talented swimmer whose family’s life changes forever after he confesses to having harmed two young children. The book is primarily told from the perspective of Noah’s mother, Katie. Unfortunately, I struggled a lot with her character. Throughout much of the story, she seemed more focused on preserving the image of her family than fully confronting the reality of what had happened. She often looked for explanations and blame elsewhere, which made it difficult for me to connect with her. What I appreciated, however, is that the novel itself never tries to justify or excuse Noah’s actions. Instead, it explores the devastating impact such a situation has on an entire family and how people cope when their perception of someone they love is completely shattered. Reading about Katie’s grief, denial, and inner conflict was heartbreaking, but there were many moments when her thoughts and reactions left me frustrated. At times, I found myself unable to understand her perspective, which made for a very emotional reading experience. Lucinda Berry deserves credit for tackling such a difficult and often uncomfortable topic. While I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about the book as a whole, it definitely left a lasting impression on me. For that reason, I’m giving it 3.5 stars. It’s one of those books that stays in your thoughts long after you’ve finished it.
