Rezension von EsaChristina Lamb documents the part of war that history keeps trying to look away from. She listens to the voices of women from Bosnia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Iraq, Syria and more. During the book she lays bare what the famous words of "collateral damage" truly mean. Through it all her approach is never sensational or voyeuristic, only heartbreakingly honest. What struck me most was how Lamb reveals the systematic nature of sexual violence in war. It's not an "inevitable tragedy". It's a strategy. A weapon. A way to destroy communities from the inside out. The women she interviews are not victims in the passive sense but survivors navigating impossible aftermaths. They are rebuilding families, raising children born of assault or facing exile for the crime of having endured. It is horrifying. At the same time it reveals the complexity of the survivors. It shows that they are neither saints nor symbols, but human beings who lived through the unlivable. This book forces you to rethink what "coverage" means. Who gets to tell stories? Who gets forgotten? Lamb doesn't just document the suffering, she also questions the systems that allow it to persist, the silence that follows and the gendered lens that has normalized it for centuries. This work redefines what moral responsibility in journalism can look like.
Rezension von NoraYou need incredibly strong nerves for this book. I had to stop several times and cried more than once. But if you have the nerves for it, then I would highly recommend it! Rape is still a taboo subject and far too little is reported about how it is used strategically in war!
