My Cousin Rachel

von Daphne du Maurier

Format:Hardcover

The young man Philip Ashley was orphaned at an early age. He has been raised by his bachelor uncle Ambrose, who falls in love and marries while traveling in Florence, then dies there in suspicious circumstances. Shortly after her husband1s death, Ambrose1s widow turns up in England, setting the stage for the unfolding of a relationship between the callow Philip and the beautiful, sophisticated, mysterious widow Rachel. And while Philip impetuously embraces the role of the moth flapping full-tilt toward the flame, the widow never puts a foot wrong. Is she designedly luring Philip to his doom? Might she even have had a hand in Ambrose1s death?

3,5⭐ This was a good suspense novel. But I didn't like being in the head of the naive and impulsive Phillip all the time. Also was the death of a dog necessary? I DON'T THINK SO! As to Rachel. In my opinion she is definitely guilty, if not of the things Phillip thought, but of seeing and understanding that her presence isn't good for this young man and still remaining by his side letting things escalate. She is a very intelligent woman. (Ps: I can't deny I have a gender bias). Was she cruel? I don't think so. Extravagant? I also do not think so, it was her "friend" who farmed her for money probably. At the end for me it was a story of three people who should've never met. There are people who are meant to be together and then there are Ambrose, Philip and Rachel who should've stayed far away from each other. (Yes Ambrose and should've kept more distance to Phillip too)
