Taking its place in the Human Comedy as a companion to Cousin Bette, the darkly humorous Cousin Pons is among of the last and greatest of Balzac's novels concerning French urban society: a cynical, pessimistic but never despairing consideration of human nature.

Rezension von RaphaelThis novel explores the flaws of human nature set in the first half of the 19th century in Paris. Two lost souls that we readers root for are faced with the greediness of neighbours, colleagues or distant relatives that just want to have a better life for themselves. The characters and places are presented in great detail which allows you to immerse in the Parisian society at that time. Although the story is not really full of suspense, I still wanted to know how it all ends with Cousin Pons and Schmucke his German companion. A finely constructed book with great warmth and at the same time a realistic depiction of the flaws of human nature.
