Broken Country

von Clare Leslie Hall

Format:Hardcover

“Stirring and mysterious…fires directly at the human heart and hits the mark.” —Delia Owens, New York Times bestselling author of Where the Crawdads Sing A love triangle unearths dangerous, deadly secrets from the past in this thrilling tale perfect for fans of The Paper Palace and Where the Crawdads Sing. “The farmer is dead. He is dead, and all anyone wants to know is who killed him.” Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident. As Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s life, tensions around the village rise and dangerous secrets and jealousies from the past resurface, this time with deadly consequences. Beth is forced to make a choice between the woman she once was, and the woman she has become. A sweeping love story with the pace and twists of a thriller, Broken Country is a novel of simmering passion, impossible choices, and explosive consequences that toggles between the past and present to explore the far-reaching legacy of first love.

I listened to the audio book and it's safe to say that I couldn't stop listening because I was really invested in the story. It's a story about (wrong) decisions, compromises, acceptance, what if's, regret, denial, love and sticking together as a family and not talking about issues until it's too late. The plot twists were sometimes predictable but I still liked them. Something was missing for me. After discussing it in book club, I came to the conclusion that it was a lack in depth concerning the characters (especially Beth and Gabriel) but I still really enjoyed the experience of listening to the book.

This book is so incredibly well written. It makes you reflect on every character’s flaws, their bad decisions, and the painful pasts that shaped who they became. You find yourself torn between understanding them and being frustrated with them — and that’s what makes the story feel so raw and real. Clare Leslie Hall captures how a country’s wounds seep into families, choices, and entire generations. The writing is steady, immersive, and quietly devastating in all the right ways. Will definitely be watching out for more of Clare Leslie Hall’s work.

Peggy Payne Rezension von Peggy Payne

Where to even begin? This book was beautifully written. it was tough to read at times. My heart hurt more than a couple of times getting through this one. Beth and Gabriel were young loves. Things change. Beth marries and has a beautiful life with Frank on their farm, with a happy family. Then, Gabriel moves back to the area. A farmer dies. A trial is held. Hearts are broken. Lives are changed forever. How did the farmer die? This book has a little bit of everything; love, loss, heartache, suspense, and so much more. Such a great book!
