4,5⭐️ wow!
So many plot twists, a possible love triangle, slow burn, and a couple of spicy chapters; this book really had it all!!!! It was amazing!
5⭐ So glad booktok was right about this one! Such a great a pretty unique story, I also like the magic system - even though I still need to lean so much more. The pace was so great: fast and always something happening while not overloading you with difficult plot lines. Some of the twists were of course pretty obvious, but that is just the tropes I also need
The cover of this book is absolutely beautiful, and the sprayed edges with the floral design are just as stunning — it’s one of those books that’s gorgeous before you even open it. One thing that stood out to me early on is that there are several characters introduced in the first few chapters who completely disappear later. Their lack of relevance felt a bit odd, and I kept wondering what their purpose was. That said, the core cast of characters is strong and memorable. Arvelle Dacien is the main character, and I really enjoyed her. She’s strong without being overly whiny or helpless. While she does have the familiar “I must be alone and trust no one” mindset, she slowly learns to let people in, which feels natural rather than forced. Her 14-year-old twin brothers, Evren and Gerith, are great additions, and Maeva becomes a genuinely good friend to Arvelle. Tiernon — a vampire, the emperor’s son, the Primus, and Arvelle’s childhood best friend turned lover — is exactly the kind of morally complex love interest I enjoy. His brother Rorrick starts out as someone you absolutely hate, but by the end, he’s a character you hate to love. Vallius Corvus, the emperor, is a powerful presence throughout the book. Leon, Kassia’s father, serves as a meaningful father figure to Arvelle, while Kassia herself was Arvelle’s best friend and an important emotional anchor. Bran, the emperor’s illegitimate son, is unhinged, cruel, and easy to despise — a truly effective villain. And Baldric and Hester are deeply annoying, awful people who absolutely get what’s coming to them. The romance and spice were well done. The sex scenes are short, clear, and tasteful — detailed enough to feel complete without being awkward or excessive. No weird euphemisms or distracting language, which I really appreciated. The story includes both emotional and high-tension moments, and the magical world the author created is rich and detailed without being confusing. It’s immersive but still easy to understand. There are also magical creatures who endure genuinely awful things, and seeing them get a happier ending was incredibly satisfying. The cast is diverse, the character development is strong, and there are a lot of genuinely likable characters. While some elements — especially certain romances and bargains — were predictable, they were still satisfying and the pacing stayed mostly fast. Overall, this book really surprised me. I don’t hand out five-star ratings easily, but this one earned it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I got this book early from book of the month!
