I was so excited about this book. I was so excited about the setting, the characters and the story... and yet this book was a complete disappointment. Starting with the Mary Sue characters who were supposed to have their rough edges, but at the same time could do everything, knew everything and understood and mastered themselves to perfection, to the fact that nothing really great happens until the last 10%... this book was nerve-wracking, exhausting and frustrating. I don't want to deny Mafi's talent for writing, there are sentences and moments where you can definitely see and read that she CAN do it - but the big picture, the implementation, is a complete disaster. So many repetitions, so many gap-filling passages, even more hot air than there was any progress in any story or character development - right up to the fact that at the end a dragon plays a completely random role in the story and the association of a flying carpet - for real? A flying carpet in a Persian fantasy setting? COME ON?!? The world building is a complete disaster. Information is thrown in at completely random points in an unnecessary digression that kills the movement of the story over and over again, goes in circles and such information is repeated over and over again - as if Mafi doesn't trust their readers to remember a fact for ten pages in this slow paced snail's pace plot. The idea has so much potential - which was simply wasted!
