The Hunting Party

von Lucy Foley

Format:Hardcover

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they?ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands?the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30th, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year?s Day, one of them is dead. The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group?s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year?s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps. Now one of them is dead ... and another of them did it. Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. But just how close is too close?

Well well well. What do I say? This book, just like the Guest List, was so full of tension, atmosphere and great description. It discusses relevant topics of our society in a subtle way that you start thinking about them after having read the book. Which is what I really liked. But essentially the book is about a group of old college friends and their partners, who go up to a remote Highland lodge in Scotland to celebrate New Year’s Eve. But one of them won’t come back from it. This is another book of the whodunnit kind and in similar style to the Guest List, the reader doesn’t know who is dead and who is the killer until almost the end. You’ve always got your suspicions but another clever twist before the end proved my suspicion wrong. Quite an entertaining read and the setting in the Highlands also won me over

1-liner review: Problematic friends are holed up in an isolated cabin to celebrate New Year together, one ends up dead but you won't even feel sorry for any of them, just pure ick. 😾This story is told cycling from present to past. The book just keeps on repeating the theme of isolation to run away from their demons and isolation bringing out the demons. 🧐It took me about 3/4 of the book to finally have hints of who tf died and who tf the suspect was. 😐Some of the characters didn't feel relevant to the story. 💀The ending felt so rushed like the publisher went "time's up, give me that new work to release." 🦴A lot of info was thrown around for the sake of confusing the reader but it didn't make that much sense when we needed it to anymore, STOP READING HERE TO GET AWAY FROM SPOILERS: . . . . . . . ______________ 1-liner spoiler review: The self-absorbed b*tch ends up dead and you can't feel sorry for her after reuniting with her friends who she still wants to bully and control, but it all backfires. 💩Miranda had it coming. 🤡 We could have seen more of Emma and what was on her mind.
