The Ex Talk

von Solomon, Rachel Lynn

Format:eBook

An Instant Indie Bestseller Public radio co-hosts navigate mixed signals in Rachel Lynn Solomon's sparkling romantic comedy debut.   Shay Goldstein has been a producer at her Seattle public radio station for nearly a decade, and she can't imagine working anywhere else. But lately it's been a constant clash between her and her newest colleague, Dominic Yun, who's fresh off a journalism master's program and convinced he knows everything about public radio.    When the struggling station needs a new concept, Shay proposes a show that her boss green-lights with excitement. On The Ex Talk, two exes will deliver relationship advice live, on air. Their boss decides Shay and Dominic are the perfect co-hosts, given how much they already despise each other. Neither loves the idea of lying to listeners, but it's this or unemployment. Their audience gets invested fast, and it's not long before The Ex Talk becomes a must-listen in Seattle and climbs podcast charts.     As the show gets bigger, so does their deception, especially when Shay and Dominic start to fall for each other. In an industry that values truth, getting caught could mean the end of more than just their careers.

I actually quite disliked this book. I didn’t have a lot of expectations but I thought the premise sounded cute and like something different. But god the dialogue was so hard to listen to (read/listened to it as an audiobook). The narrator had a good voice but I found her men’s voice combined with the cringe dialogue just…yeah. I hated the self pity from Shay a lot, the continuous mention of their age gap and the racism, as well as sexism which is mentioned but nobody did anything against it (kinda wished they did something about it at the end). To the romance: I simply didn’t believe their chemistry or romantic feelings, it came through as really 'tropy' and not real at all. And I disliked especially that Shay foamed at her mouth for Dominic from literally chapter 1, yes he might be attractive but come on. (+ too many mentions of 'sexy forearms') Lastly, I think that the characters, especially Shay, did not act like full fledged adults (mind you she is 30), just really cringe statements and quoting of weird pop culture references.

sooo I didn't love EVERYTHING in this book but it would have felt wrong to give anything less than five stars, as "the ex talk" has made me feel things I haven't felt since watching "Notting Hill" for the first time
