Not Quite Dead Yet
von Holly Jackson
After she is fatally wounded in an assault, a young woman uses her last few days to try to solve her own murder, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. Margaret "Jet" Mason has never been able to finish anything. In her twenty-seven years, she's dropped out of school, quit a promising career, and dumped all her boyfriends. Her town's annual Halloween festival is a pageant of the familiar faces of friends and family, each a reminder of her failure to launch, made more surreal by the ghoulish costumes everyone's wearing. But no matter—she's about to leave this town behind and get her fresh start somewhere else. Like with everything else, she quits the party and heads home. But as she walks in her front door, someone attacks her from behind, fracturing her skull—and leaves her for dead. Thirty-six hours later, she wakes up in the hospital to grim news: The attack has left a small bone fragment that's putting pressure on her brain's arterial wall. The doctors tell her that a large aneurysm will soon form, and when it ruptures, the hemorrhage will be fatal. Jet has two choices: Undergo immediate surgery to remove the bone fragment, with less than a ten percent chance of survival. Or don't, and die sometime in the coming week. With the odds stacked against her and death a foregone conclusion, Jet knows what she has to do. She has never finished anything in her life . . . until now. With her last remaining week, she’s going to find out who murdered her.

LOVE THIS ONE!
I went into this book for the premise and stayed for the emotional damage. The idea of a woman with only days left to live trying to solve her own attempted murder is instantly gripping, and Holly Jackson absolutely leans into that urgency. From the very first chapters, there’s this constant ticking clock that made it hard for me to put the book down — every conversation, every clue feels heavy because Jet literally doesn’t have time to waste. Jet is… a lot. She’s sharp, sarcastic, and sometimes frustrating, but honestly that made her feel real to me. She doesn’t suddenly become saintly just because she’s dying, and I appreciated that. At times her voice did feel younger than her age, but I didn’t mind — it added to the sense that she’s clinging to life with humor and defiance rather than grace. What really worked for me was the emotional side of the story. The relationships — especially with Billy — added so much heart, and the betrayal at the center of the mystery genuinely hurt. This isn’t just a “who did it” thriller; it’s about resentment, privilege, unfinished business, and how little time it can take for everything to fall apart. The pacing wasn’t perfect, and I did feel like a few moments dragged or became slightly chaotic toward the end, but the payoff was worth it. The ending hit me harder than I expected — not just because of what happens, but because of what it means. Overall, this was intense, sad, and gripping in a way that stuck with me after I finished. If you like thrillers with emotional weight and morally messy characters, this one is absolutely worth the read.
