NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Read with Jenna Book Club Pick as Featured on Today - From the author of Daisy Jones & The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo . . . NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND MARIE CLAIRE - "Irresistible . . . High drama at the beach, starring four sexy, surfing siblings and their deadbeat, famous-crooner dad."-People Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, the family drama that ensues will change their lives will change forever. Malibu: August 1983. It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over-especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva. The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud-because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he's been inseparable since birth. Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can't stop thinking about promised she'll be there. And Kit has a couple secrets of her own-including a guest she invited without consulting anyone. By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come rising to the surface. Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

I am addicted to the TJR's writing! After reading and adoring "The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" over two years ago I finally picked up another one of her novels and let me tell you ... I should have done this ages ago. Malibu Rising is so so much better than the blurb sounds. A party that lasts 24h, I couldn't imagine how this would make for a great read - but it did. The story doesn't begin with a party. The story begins with 4 children, who grew into adults far too early and managed to make the out of an impossible situation. This story is not about a party. It is about sisterhood, brotherhood and the unconditional love between siblings. It reveals secrets, takes a look at the past and waves a way into a brighter future. All in all: "a great party" doesn't even begin to cover the emotional rollercoaster this book took me on. I loved that there where several POVs that wove into one another at some point. I did not only read about Nina's, Kit's, Jay's and Hud's feelings, dreams and fears, but emotionally connected to at least 15 people through their individual point of view. I got to know Nina the best - she is incredibly strong and has overcome so many obstacles I felt like there was no way this woman will ever break. She will just keep on giving and expecting nothing in return. Everybody who has a Nina in their lives should be incredibly greatful, because that's the best thing that can happen to you. Hud is the sweet guy next door who loves with all his heart and never lets go of his dreams. He knows when to shut up and listen, even when his siblings don't. He knows just the right words to make everybody around him feel special. He is kind and never envys his siblings for their success. Kit is the baby of the family and tries to be taken seriously. By baby I mean 20 years old, which isn't that young anymore, but her siblings feel like they still have to take care of her. Troughout the book I watched her grow more comfortable inside her body and get in touch with her feelings again. (As you can see this book entails way more than just a great party.) I didn't connect with Jay as much. He is the sunny boy, he is everybodys darling and he is incredibly successful at his job. He seems to have it all, but as everybody who seems like their world is perfect, his certainly isn't. He struggles with his own problems and on the surface I got that, but I didn't feel the emotional side of his story. While the author made everybody (even people she only wrote 2 pages about) relatable, I could not relate to Jay. As you might have gotten by now, this book thrives thorugh the characters, but the story is still worth telling. It streches over several years and there is always something happening. At least after the first 150 pages, when the party finally starts there is a lot going on. In the end is was a little too much for me. The author introduced two new characters while the party was going on I was not really on board with. I blew the carfully constructed fundation on the characters way out of proportion. But, I don't want this to contain spoilers... so read this for yourselves. And ... I can not stress this enough ... READ THIS BOOK.

☆☆☆☆┊4 stars : ̗̀➛“Alcoholism is a disease with many faces, and some of them look beautiful.” : ̗̀➛”She may have been in a house she never would have chosen. She may have been left by a man she couldn’t even remember why she’d married. But the Pacific was her ocean. Malibu was her home.” -‘๑ triggers <spoiler> ⤷ sexual harassment ⤷ parental abandonment ⤷ cheating ⤷ alcoholism & drug use ⤷ abortion & miscarriage ⤷ death of a parent ⤷ fire </spoiler> -‘๑ expectations I don’t know what I expected honestly. Probably a story like Evelyn Hugo or Daisy Jones or Carrie Soto. A story about the life of a person or group that shows the humanity and imperfection in each one of us. -‘๑ content Malibu Rising is a story about the Riva family. The entire novel takes place over the course of 24 hours. The four surfing siblings suddenly face several conflicts, some of which reach back to their parents' relationship. It is a story about family, tolerance, and forgiveness. -‘๑ my opinion So, now it's getting sort of difficult for me. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the other TJR books I've read. Still, it was really good, and I could relate to the characters. I can’t say what bothered me about this book, but it just wasn’t as good as the others. I'd still recommend it. -‘๑ conclusion Overall, I still enjoyed it , but it wasn’t as good as the other novels in the Reidverse.

Malibu Rising was an enjoyable read, though not as gripping as Taylor Jenkins Reid’s other novels. I found it hard to stay emotionally connected to the main story amid so many side plots, and it wasn’t quite a page-turner. However, I really liked the flashbacks and how they deepened the characters’ backstories.
