Rezension von GabrieleA transgender girl, a contract with a demon, violin geniuses, Asian Americans, emigrants, doughnuts out of a replicator, the gamer scene, space aliens stranded on Earth....wait, what? A novel dealing with these (and even more) topics could be pretty off the wall. But it's a damn compelling story that hooked me right away. Unfortunately there are serious problems with the point of view. When an author, mid-sentence, switches POV, they have to be able to do it. Here it doesn't work. There are just too many characters whose stories are very interesting in themselves, but they don't quite come together within a single novel. So some characters remain flat and are not unique, so I thought several times: who's speaking? What is happening? Did I miss something? The author has wanted too much, put all her potential in this one book. It's also not entirely clear to me who the target audience for this book is. Young adults who are into vampire gothic gamer stuff? Science Fiction fans who also liked Becky Chamber (that would be me)? Readers who like to read LBGTQ* novels? Okay, it's for all of you, maybe. But you have to be open minded. First read this in 2022. Reread it in 2024 and still love it.
Rezension von kenit's unlucky, but i can't get into it. difficult to pinpoint the reason, but i think it has to do with the too-fragmented style. and also maybe the fact that i can't seem to stand soft SF at this point in my life.
