THE INSTANT #1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Shortlisted for the An Post Irish Book Awards Novel of the Year Named as an Essential Read by The New Yorker Named Best Book of the Year by: The New York Times • The Globe and Mail • TIME • The Winnipeg Free Press • The Guardian • The Independent • NPR • Dazed • VOX • People • Kirkus Reviews • Publishers Weekly An exquisitely moving story about grief, love and family, from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney. Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties – successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women – his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined. For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude – a period of desire, despair and possibility – a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.

I liked it, but after Conversations with friends, I was a bit disappointed. I couldn’t really get Peter, so I was always waiting for Ivans parts and I kind of pushed through towards the end.

I share a love-hate relationship with all four of Sally Rooney’s novels. To me, her characters weren’t very likeable, and the plots were not interesting enough. I kept reading her novels because others loved them. After the fourth novel, I’m beginning to understand what people might like about her writing. For several reasons, those aspects may even be what I disliked before. Rooney doesn’t offer any form of escapism, which I am desperately craving when reading. Mostly, she writes about relationships between people. These relationships, however, never represented my own relationships, my priorities in forming connections, or my desire for genuine friendship. Despite this, Intermezzo offered more to me. Although I agree that the story was partially tedious in its presentation, Ivan was the first character in all her novels with whom I sympathized. I enjoyed Rooney’s writing in all of Ivan’s chapters and found Margaret to be the first character who is genuinely interested in others rather than egocentric. Nonetheless, she faces several difficulties because of this, which is why Intermezzo offers a story about how life simply is: complicated. Different people live with different personalities, characteristics, and priorities in how they form connections with others. All in all, I found it a tad too long; however, it is, for me, her first well-rounded novel—one that touched me and offered characters, conflicts, and a storyline I could resonate with.
