This book was very beautiful and captivating. I remember seeing it a long time ago in a bookshop when it was first released. The cover and the title already made it seem intriguing and interesting. After reading it now, I can definitely say that the story truly lived up to that first impression. The story follows the lives of three sisters—Bonnie, Avery, and Lucky—after the death of their sister Nicki. Each sister is at a different stage in life and they all live in different places around the world. Avery is a lawyer living in London, Bonnie is a former boxer living in Los Angeles, and Lucky is a model living in Paris. One day, their mother sends them an email informing them that their father wants to sell the house they all grew up in—the same house where all of Nicki’s belongings still are. Because of this, the sisters have to come together again to figure out what to do. All of them are very different and they each deal with grief in their own way. Nicki’s death has affected them deeply but differently. Avery, the oldest, begins smoking and stealing. Lucky, the youngest and always the wild one, starts drinking more and taking harder drugs. Bonnie leaves her career as a boxer and moves to Los Angeles. Their relationships with each other are complicated but very realistic. Coco Mellors writes their dynamic incredibly well. Each chapter is dedicated to a different sister, allowing the reader to see the story from their individual perspectives. The chapters are quite long, but the writing is so captivating that I barely noticed. What I especially loved was how the author portrayed their emotions. The sisters argue a lot, but I could never really pick a side because it was easy to understand how each of them was feeling. I also really enjoyed Coco Mellors’ writing style. She describes their lives and emotions in a way that makes them feel very real. In another book, I probably wouldn’t have been able to support Lucky’s point of view because of the drugs, sex, and chaos surrounding her life. However, Mellors manages to make it interesting and understandable. The book does contain quite a lot of nudity. While it fits the lifestyle of the characters—especially Lucky’s—I personally felt that some scenes were a bit unnecessary. For example, when a random girl in front of the bar shows Lucky her breasts and the moment is described in great detail. Scenes like that felt slightly excessive. Nonetheless, the book was beautiful overall. It portrays sisterhood, grief, and complicated relationships in a very honest way. I loved the sisters with their different personalities, pasts, lives, and emotions. They were all interesting characters in their own way. I absolutely loved the writing style and the concept of the book.
