At the Mountains of Madness
von H. P. Lovecraft
Initially rejected by Lovecraft's publisher, 'At The Mountains of Madness' is now considered a classic of the horror genre. This was the second Lovecraft story I’ve read, after ‘The Color Out Of Space’, and I have to say that I enjoyed this immensely. I might have expected and liked some more straightforward horror in its second half, but I still build a great interest in the mystery and ‘impossible’ nature of the discoveries. With much enjoyment I followed the narrators descriptions of first the mission, then the communication with Lake which might have been my personal favorite part of the story, and later their venture beyond the titular ‘Mountains of Madness’. And after two stories, I also have to say that I really like Lovecraft’s writing style. He was a terribly racist idiot, but a fantastic horror writer. 4.5/5
