I loved this book. There is something so delicate and melancholic about the way Dostoevsky writes about loneliness, connection and the brief moments that can completely change how we see our lives. The story is simple, but the emotions feel incredibly deep. I especially loved how it captures the feeling of becoming attached to someone and imagining everything that could happen, even when reality has something else in store. It left me with that bittersweet feeling of having experienced something beautiful, even if it could never truly last.
Heart shattering
This book shattered my heart.
As a chronic yearner myself, I have to say that scarcely anyone can do it better that Dostoyevsky. white nights is exactly right for indulging in the sweet painful fantasy of unrequited almost-love, the edge between desiring and fulfillment, the sweet spot of masochism that turns a simple romance story into angsty hunger for the other, the one you can never possess.
