Connection as book: Raw and deeply intimate, making me feel all the things all at once. Longing, arousal, grief, whimsy, playfulness. Miranda July's writing about a woman's journey to be a real and feeling human is so superb, I want to fall face first into it every day. I mean: "The crossover into this land of physical intimacy would be like breaking the sound barrier or a plane lifting off, babies learning to walk. A new world would open up and yes it would be rife with new problems but oh the joy that would come from pausing, midsentence, to kiss." No notes. Truly none.
Rezension von LuciaKrasse, intensive Geschichte, ich konnte es nicht weglegen, obwohl es teilweise wirklich sehr crazy war. Trotzdem konnte ich mich gut in die Protagonistin hineinfühlen. Es werden wichtige Themen wie Altern, Menopause, Mutterschaft, Lust (!), Ehe und Arten von Beziehungen thematisiert. Ich fande es dazu besonders gut geschrieben :)
Rezension von HannaDieses Buch polarisiert! Im Zentrum des Romans steht einen mittelmäßige Künstlerin, die zu ihrem 45. Geburtstag einen Road Trip von der Westküste der USA nach New York plant. Sie bleibt jedoch schon nach wenigen Kilometern in einem Motel hängen, richtet sich ihr Zimmer dort komplett neu ein und verliert sich in der Vorstellung eines ganz anderen Lebens mit Davey, einem jungen Mann, den sie an der Tankstelle zu Beginn ihrer Reise kennengelernt hat. Außer ihrer Freundin Jordi weiß niemand von diesem "Abenteuer" und nach zweieinhalb Wochen kehrt sie zurück in ihr altes Leben mit Mann und Kind. Aber kann sie einfach weitermachen wie zuvor? Eher nicht – sonst wäre die Geschichte ja viel zu schnell vorbei 😉 Es geht um die Suche nach Freiheit und Selbstverwirklichung, weibliche Lust, Menopause, alternative Beziehungsmodelle, Mutterschaft … Die Sprache ist direkt, klar, nichts wird verschönert oder kaschiert. Ich gebe zu, dass es auch für mich Stellen gab, die mich leicht verstört zurückgelassen haben, aber gleichzeitig war es ein extrem intensives Leseerlebnis und ich war überrascht wie gut ich mich in die Protagonistin hineinfühlen konnte. Auch wenn July dementiert, dass es sich um ein autobiografisches Werk handelt, liest sich das Buch sehr intim und persönlich und gewisse Parallelen zwischen Autorin und Protagonistin können nun einmal nicht übersehen werden; verstärkt wird dieser Eindruck außerdem durch einen kleinen Plot Twist am Ende. Obwohl die Geschichte komplett verrückt ist, wirkt sie doch unglaublich glaubhaft und realistisch und zeigt sehr eindrücklich, dass das Leben mit Mitte Vierzig noch lange nicht vorbei ist. Ein Buch über das man sich am besten selbst ein Bild machen sollte!
