Reviewed by Agostina.3.25⭐ This was good, but I was expecting more than what I got. What I liked: - The magic system! The shénnóng magic is really cool. I don't even like tea, but it kept me interested. - The setting. Imperial China, a competition, messy politics, lives at stake. - The writing. Vivid descriptions galore in this. Very cinematic, I liked it at lot. Unfortunately, there's just <i>something</i> missing. It's like a combination of good things, instead of excellent things, if that makes sense. The protagonist/narrator doesn't have much of a personality. It's like everyone around her had a spark that she lacks. She's bland, which upsets me because her motivations are very noble and she does have her moments. I should totally be rooting for her, but I'm only doing so because it's the right thing, not because of her. The stakes are objectively high for Ning, but I don't feel as attached or engaged as I hoped. I'm glad I'm reading this without having to wait for the sequel. That cliffhanger would've pissed me off otherwise.
Reviewed by JessyIch finde es spannend, von alten chinesischen Traditionen zu lesen. Diese wurden kunstvoll mit Geschichten und Magie verwoben. Der Schreibstil ist flüssig und gut lesbar. Die Figuren sind in ihren Konflikten gut dargestellt und entwickeln sich weiter, ich hatte sofort Empathie.
