The story was actually pretty good. It follows the classic epic tournament trope, which is a very popular and frequently used concept in fantasy. This time, though, it’s centered around vampires being the ones in power, with the winner earning the chance to ask the Vampire Goddess, known as the Mother, for any wish they desire. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and flew through most of it. However, somewhere around the last hundred pages (roughly pages 400–502), I completely lost the motivation to keep reading. I ended up putting it down for a while, and unfortunately, I can’t fully remember what exactly made me lose interest. I do remember that there was a reason, though. If I put a book aside, it’s usually because something about it isn’t working for me. Even if I can’t recall the exact issue anymore, the fact that I felt the need to stop reading says enough. Because of that, I’m giving it 4 stars. I still think it’s an enjoyable fantasy novel with an interesting premise and a fun tournament storyline, but something in the final stretch kept it from being a full five-star read for me.
