Realm Breaker is the first book in the eponymous trilogy. Allward is on the brink of ruin, as Taristan of Old Cor is hell-bent on opening the dormant Spindles scattered across the realm. The Spindles are portals to other worlds that will unleash What Waits and bring about the world's demise. Corayne an-Amarat, daughter of notorious pirate Meliz an-Amarat, led a rather protected life. Everything changes on one fateful day, when she finds herself pulled into the middle of a fight to save Allward. Along with an unlikely group of companions, she leaves the safe confines of her sheltered life behind and walks from one danger into another to stop Taristan. Realm Breaker is an action-packed tale with plot twists galore that had the vivid imagery it conjured in my mind run rampant. The tale is narrated from various points of view, making it so much more insightful and entertaining. The bickering between the Elder Dom (short for Domacridhan) and Sorasa Sarn, the Amhara assassin, is sublime and provided so many hilarious moments throughout the story. Being exact opposites, it is no surprise that they cannot see eye to eye, leading to countless squabbles. Following the companions on their quest never got dull. The narrative starts with an emphasis on the world-building, which made it difficult for me to immerse myself in the story. On top of this, I had some difficulties with the writing, in particular with Dom’s way of speaking. Being a 500-year-old immortal Elder from Iona, he has a certain way of talking. At times he would even sound stilted, but then would use words that did not seem likely to be in his vocabulary. Nonetheless, I enjoyed Realm Breaker immensely. I was already sold when I read beforehand that Victoria Aveyard was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s 'The Lord of the Rings'. Companions, a quest, high stakes - count me in. Another aspect that makes this book a veritable treasure is that it boosts several strong female characters, from Erida, the morally grey Queen of Galland, Sorasa and the bounty-hunter Sigil to the sharp-minded strategist Corayne and her notorious mother. All strong and independent women set on ruling the world. Outstanding first book!
