Reviewed by kenA solid read as always. The author’s pacing, brisk and action-packed without being overwhelming thanks to Tomas’ introspection, makes the novel an enjoyable experience. Plus it helps that the events in the story are intense that one can’t help but need to know what happens next. There are some verbal tics? habits? that Tomas has that has begun to feel like filler phrases now though. And it’s not just the verbal. I wonder about his constant reaching for brandy. I get it - as a matter of course to control his PTSD, i’m guessing. And to further nitpick Tomas’ character - his feelings for Ailsa leave me unconvinced. Simply because this is the third book and he has been apart from her for a while - or at least, I don’t remember much of why or how he could possibly be enamoured by her. The handful of evidence offered in PoG were reliant on memory and Ailsa’s looks. So, pardon me for being skeptical. His constant refrain of fool, fool, in referring to himself and his feelings for her was funny. The reveal about Tomas’ sasura was pretty slick too. Some questions/concerns I want answered for the fourth and final book: Billy and Mina? What’s up with that? Mina, i can see was mostly for plot device. Anne and Rosie? I need them to live through book 4 I can also imagine Tomas attempting to get Ailsa to betray Vogel next book. Curious to see how he goes about it. Or, if Ailse is Tomas’ bbeg (which i kinda hope she is), how would that battle go? Hammy (and basic) it may be, I can’t wait to see the ten of swords foreshadowing through. And what the hell did Ailse’s dad mean when he said she was a complicated woman? All this foreshadowing!!
