Reviewed by BellezhoI really liked Everwood, but I sometimes found the language and writing style a bit challenging. I liked the time period it was set in, even though the exact era was never clearly defined, which didn't feel crucial to the story. (Speaking of Everwood here, not the real world) I did have to push myself to get through the first part, as it was mostly about the FMC: her life, struggles and the achievements she worked hard for, as well as the pressures of being a young woman of high society. I have to say, though, the descriptions of Everwood were delightful. The world felt whimsical and childlike, like something a child might imagine, which suited the story's mood perfectly. Sometimes the story does feel a bit slow, switching between bits that drag and others that are too detailed, but I get that it wasn't meant to be some super detailed story, and that's part of what makes it so charming. The story is based on the classic Nutcracker tale: the selfish, power-hungry king, the oppressed citizens secretly planning a rebellion, and the young ballet dancer who dances until her feet are bloody and broken. It felt like a more grown-up version of the story we all know and love. I think readers who like classic fairy tales reimagined for a more grown-up audience will really like it, while still keeping a bit of that childlike wonder. As for the characters, I'm not totally sure who I liked the most, but I think the FMC's brother stood out for me. I also really liked the way the book looked at female friendships: a nice and welcome change. Overall, it was a fun read and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes classic fairy tales with a more grown-up twist, but still a touch of whimsy.
