And finally, Bride’s mother herself, Sweetness, who takes a lifetime to come to understand that “what you do to children matters. And they might never forget.”“Powerful.... A tale that is as forceful as it is affecting, as fierce as it is resonant.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

Anytime is a good time to read the work of Toni Morrison, an American treasure. This is a novella, but no less potent than her longer pieces. Morrison has a way of writing like a compass, a tool that helps us find our souls and makes us understand the human condition that much better. In this tale, Morrison introduces the reader to a successful, traffic-stoppingly beautiful career woman named "Bride." Bride has trouble dealing with her past and when she stops long enough to think about it, it comes back into her life, just like a head-on collision. This story is a reminder of the pain that can come back into our lives and that, often, the past isn't really done with us. That is all.
