Reviewed by Hamide Kahraman Caraval is the first book in the eponymous series. It is a game full of magic, clues and puzzles that only a select few can partake in. After years of unrelentingly trying to obtain an invitation, the sisters Scarlett and Donatella finally find themselves invited. Upon their arrival at the host island, Donatella is taken by Legend, Caraval’s organiser, and this year's game is all about finding her in time. The characters in this tale are intriguing and mysterious. It is not clear who is simply a participant and who is a performer in disguise. Initially, I was immensely annoyed by Scarlett Dragna. She is naive, easily cowed, and overly risk-averse. As the story went on, I gradually understood her better, yet I still could not condone all her actions. She is a girl who was abandoned by her mother and grew up under the thrall of an abusive father. She was forced to grow up way too fast to protect herself and Donatella. Unsurprisingly, Scarlett is overly intent on adhering to her father's notion of "proper etiquette" to provide no reason for her father to exact retribution. That sadistic man would unleash his fury on the other sibling; hence Scarlett's transgressions would be taken out on Donatella. So, of course, she is constantly scared and timid. Her character development, albeit a small one, was still great to experience. The language is poetic, and while I was not able to deduce all comparisons, as some notions were foreign, I still savoured it. It added to the mysteriousness that the world of Caraval is shrouded in. This first book is full of magic and deceit; nothing is really as it seems - just like Caraval. Whenever I thought I figured it out, something else would occur that would unravel my theories.
