Reviewed by RaymondI received an ARC from Netgalley and Saga Press in exchange for a fair and honest review. Interesting read. A fantasy tale based on the Maya and Aztecs. I don’t know of any other fantasy story’s based on those two cultures. The characters are fairly fleshed out and the story builds to a climactic ending and delivers that ending. I hope the series continues to be worth reading.

Roanhorse baut ihre Geschichte auf prä-kolumbianischen Zivilisationen auf: Glaubenssysteme, Wissenschaften, Herrschaft, die Stadt als Gesellschaft. Viel passiert hier im Hintergrund des Plots (ich hoffe auf noch mehr matriarchalische Power im zweiten Teil). Doch das Spannende passiert in den verschiedenen Erzählstimmen. War ich zuletzt ermüdet von Fantasy, in der Prinzen und Könige und Hyper-Krieger Intrigen schmieden und um Vorherrschaft kämpfen, liest sich „Black Sun“ sehr erfrischend. Die Figuren sind motiviert jenseits von Machtinteresse. Es geht um Loyalität, Gruppe, Isolation, Lust, Freundschaft - darum wie eine Außenseiter*in in Gesellschaft positioniert ist und wie sich diese Position ändern kann. Das Vergeltungsmotiv war mir (noch) nichts, aber ich bin sehr gespannt wie es sich in den nächsten zwei Teilen ausspielt, denn Band 1 endet mit einem enormen Cliffhanger! „… and the only revenge he would take would be in the pleasure of a long and well-lived existence.“
