A group of friends return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they first stumbled on as teenagers in this mesmerising odyssey of terror. An atmospheric, haunting page-turner from the bestselling author of Come with Me For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together. Black Mouth is a solid, atmospheric horror that really leans into childhood trauma and the idea that some things follow you into adulthood whether you want them to or not. The strongest part for me was the friend group dynamic and the way the story moves between past and present. The dread builds slowly, and when it gets creepy, it really works. Dennis especially stood out as such a memorable and emotional character. This definitely gave me It vibes with kids facing something unspeakable and then being pulled back years later to confront it again. The similarities are noticeable, but Malfi still makes it his own with a more grounded, emotional focus. That said, the pacing dragged a bit in places, and some elements felt familiar if you’ve read a lot of small-town horror. Still, the atmosphere and character work kept me invested. Overall, a haunting, character-driven horror that lingers after you finish. Worth the read if you like slow-burn, nostalgic horror with emotional weight.
The first half of the book was way too much of the book IT by Stephen King. The whole setup and the way the characters talked were too similar to IT. The writing and the audiobook voice was perfect for the book so I kept going. the last half of the book was fantastic! It was weird, creative and disturbing. I absolutely loved it!
