I think the Zodiac case is one of the most intriguing Serial Killer cases of all time. My interest started with David Fincher’s 2007 masterpiece “Zodiac”. That film subsequently lead me to Graysmith’s first book, released in 1986. I really like that book a lot and in some ways, ut helped the investigation a lot. Now this book, while still interesting since it’s about the Zodiac, is not nearly as good as the first one. First of all, there probably is no one who knows more about this case than Graysmith! He has all the information. I respect the effort and time he put into this case a lot and I’m thankful that he unearthed and combined so much information. But a strong case can be made that this book simply contains too much information. I mean, I don’t mind knowing a lot of details and even things that are not directly tied to the case, but the reading experience isn’t the greatest. There is a long part in the middle, the majority of the book, that, while interesting and informative, is way too sluggish. Some parts are kinda repetitive and the overload of information just decreases the reading enjoyment. I wouldn’t say anything is uninteresting per se, but some parts certainly are too much, too long, too dragged out and too repetitive. But towards the end, I wanna say maybe the last 60-100 pages, the book regains momentum and gets more engaging. The part about Darlene Ferrin was my favorite part about the first book, or maybe the most intriguing part, and that again was the case here. The last chapter before the epilogue is fantastic. “Zodiac Unmasked” is a good and undoubtedly informative book, but it’s too long. Finally, I’m still not fully convinced that Arthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac. It’s is very probable that he was and there are some really damning pieces of evidence, but over all I think there isn’t enough. The evidence almost exclusively is circumstantial and there are pieces that don’t speak for him being the suspect. And also, I think most of his accusers, like Don Cheney, just seem very suspect to me. Cheney in particular is a strange and in his own way kinda suspicious guy. What I’m convinced of is that we sadly won’t ever get a definitive answer to who the Zodiac killer was.
