Where'd You Go, Bernadette

von Maria Semple

Format:Hardcover

Bernadette Fox has vanished. When her daughter Bee claims a family trip to Antarctica as a reward for perfect grades, Bernadette, a fiercely intelligent shut-in, throws herself into preparations for the trip. But worn down by years of trying to live the Seattle life she never wanted, Ms. Fox is on the brink of a meltdown. And after a school fundraiser goes disastrously awry at her hands, she disappears, leaving her family to pick up the pieces--which is exactly what Bee does, weaving together an elaborate web of emails, invoices, and school memos that reveals a secret past Bernadette has been hiding for decades. Where'd You Go Bernadette is an ingenious and unabashedly entertaining novel about a family coming to terms with who they are and the power of a daughter's love for her mother.

The story started out very fun and interesting until you get to the middle part. The story consists of annoying neighbors who just don't get you or want to accept you for being an introvert, a woman who tries to steal a husband (and does in fact), and races where you don't know if they have some weird discrimination towards Canadians, Filipinos, and so on. First off, I find this to have a very small effect on people's lives like it just showed a small glimpse into what Bee and Elgie felt about Bernadette's disappearance even if this is told from Bee's perspective. Also, I do not believe Bee can easily just forgive a dad that easily. Take note, there is that 15 year old teenage angst. There wasn't much of a closure afterwards like okay what happened to everyone. It ended with the letter that Bernadette and Bee will be living together. I really did enjoy the book except for those questionable parts that felt could have given more to the characters and the story. Instead it seemed like there was a need to finish the story immediately.

I just finished this book and I'm kind of undecided about it. I liked it, but it was confusing at times, Bernadette was a super crazed and complicated character to relate or sympathize with and, besides Bee, pretty much every other character on this novel was just detestable. I absolutely hated Elgin and everything he did, and I think he ended up pretty good after everything, with was one of the things that took a good star out of my rating, because SERIOUSLY. Also, Soo-Lin. Just no. Audrey redeemed herself in the end, and I even ended up kind of liking her and laughing with her, but for most of the novel I just wanted to throw my Kindle out the window every time the character uttered a word. In the end, though, everything turned out a little silly, but funny too, so I ended up enjoying the reading and I decided to give it a 3 stars.
